CHP Incident: Susanville Man Sustains Major Injuries After Saturday Morning Pursuit

The California Highway Patrol has released details of an April 21st, pursuit and single-vehicle collision on Richmond Road, near Gold Run Road, that sent a Susanville man to Renown Medical Center in Reno with major injuries.

Saturday morning, at around 2:00, according to the report, two CHP officers were on patrol when they observed a tan 1996 Kia Sephia traveling westbound on South Railroad Avenue, east of Richmond Road. The Kia’s left rear taillight was broken and emitting white light.

Officer Beem and Officer McLain activated their patrol vehicle’s overhead emergency lights, initiating an enforcement stop. Rather than stopping, the driver of the Kia accelerated rapidly before making a left turn onto southbound Richmond Road.

The Susanville Communication Center was notified of the pursuit and air support was requested.

While traveling southbound on Richmond Road, south of Gold Run Road, the driver of the Kia failed to negotiate a sharp left curve in the roadway.

The vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway, struck a fence and overturned, coming to rest on its roof, on the west side of Richmond Road, south of Gold Run Road.

The driver of the Kia, identified by the CHP as 34-year old Susanville resident Jason Lusk, climbed out of the vehicle without assistance and was immediately taken into custody by Officer Beem and Officer McLain on charges which included willfully fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle, driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lusk was transported by helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno, with major injuries.
