A San Francisco man escaped injury Friday despite overturning a commercial box truck near Fredonyer Pass on Highway 36 west of Susanville.

Shortly after 10:30a.m., according to details provided by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol, CHP dispatch received a call reporting a reckless driver in a box truck, traveling east on Highway 36, approaching the pass.

“Approximately 6 minutes later, Susanville CHP Dispatch was notified that the same box truck had overturned and was now on it’s side in the middle of the eastbound lanes of State Route 36,” explains CHP Public Information Officer Bruce Thuelchassaigne.

Initial reports were that the box truck was filled with immature marijuana plants but the CHP officer determined the load was instead immature industrial hemp plants.

The single occupant, identified by the CHP as 58-year old San Francisco resident Xuanzhong Yang, was wearing his seatbelt and driving at an estimated 30 to 40 miles per hour when he lost control of the 2019 Hino commercial box truck.

The collision is still under investigation and according to the CHP drugs or DUI do not appear to be a factor in the incident.
