Summer bus shuttle service on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail begins Saturday, June 1st, and will continue every Saturday through the summer season. The service is a partnership of the Bureau of Land Management and Lassen Rural Bus.
On Saturdays, the bus picks up passengers at 8:30a.m. at the Historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Road, and makes stops at Devil’s Corral, Fredonyer Summit and Westwood.
This allows hikers and mountain bike riders to use the trail for return trips to Susanville. Depending on the stop, the return trips are 7, 18 and 30 miles.
The BLM shuttles bicycles in a specially-designed trailer. Participants should arrive early to allow time for bike loading. There are separate fees for the bike shuttle and bus service.
During the first part of summer the bus will stop only at Devil’s Corral because western reaches of the trail are too muddy for use.
A special Memorial Day shuttle is planned for Monday, May 27th, with the same departure time from the Depot.
On weekdays, trail users can also use the Lassen Rural Bus West County Commuter service that picks up riders at the Main Street and Gay Street intersection and on Riverside Drive near Walmart, both in Susanville and can make stops at the above Bizz Johnson Trail drop-off stops.
Groups of more than six can arrange special bike shuttle service for mountain bike outings from June through October. Groups can reserve the bike shuttle by telephoning the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, (530) 257-0456.
