Adopt A Pet Today from the Lassen County Animal Shelter – Frequently Asked Questions

Lassen County Animal Shelter – Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Lassen County Animal Shelter a no-kill shelter?
No. The Lassen County Animal Shelter is a small shelter with limited resources that serves all of Lassen County. Despite that fact, euthanasia rates are low. Shelter policy is that no adoptable animal will be euthanized. The shelter also works closely with numerous no-kill rescues and has implemented waiting lists for people looking to surrender their animals, which relieves the stress and possibility of overcrowding.

My life situation has changed. How can I surrender my animal to the shelter?
Shelter staff understands that surrendering an animal is not an easy decision. Call the shelter to speak with someone about your situation, pet, and surrendering procedures. The shelter has wonderful relations with many no-kill rescues and everyone works hard to make sure surrendered animals are comfortable, happy, and well exercised while they await adoption or transfer.

Does the shelter have a volunteer program?
No. Unfortunately, the Lassen County Animal Shelter does not currently have a volunteer program. If interested in volunteering to help local animals in need, the Lassen Humane Society would appreciate help once fundraising can resume. If interested, Peggy Speer with the Lassen Humane Society can be reached at 257-4555.

There are dogs at the shelter. How come they are not available for adoption?
There are numerous reasons why a dog may not be available for adoption. Most commonly, the dog is in a stray holding period to allow the owner sufficient time to claim it or the owner is already aware of where their dog is and is expected to come redeem it. Other scenarios may include, but are not limited to, confiscation or quarantine. In such instances, these dogs have owners and are also waiting to go home.

I have multiple cats/dogs I need to rehome. Can I leave them in the outside kennels after hours?
No. The animal shelter has a waiting list for people looking to surrender their animals. Staff call in animals off the lists when space in the shelter becomes available to house them. Dumping cats/dogs in the outside kennels can result in overcrowding the shelter and force staff to make the difficult decision to euthanize animals for space. Please call the shelter and speak with staff to be put on the waiting list if you have the need to surrender an animal.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours during the COVID-19 pandemic are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 257-9200.
