92 Year-Old Dementia Patient Found after 2 Day Search in Desert

The Lassen County Sheriff’s department today released details in the case of a 92 year-old dementia patient who was reported missing Sunday, and whose car was discovered at a remote location near Deep Cut road in eastern Lassen County on Monday.

According to Captain Matt McFarland, the vehicle was found abandoned and stuck on a large boulder.

Members of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue, BLM rangers and Fish and Game Officers responded to assist, and a search of the desolate area began with the Bureau of Land Management providing a helicopter to search from the air.

The search for the missing man continued through the night.

Early Tuesday morning the Sheriff’s Office received a call from Caesar Hernandez, an employee at a ranch on Trumbull Road east of Highway 395, who reported finding an elderly male subject lying in the field.

Officers from the Sheriff’s Office responded and identified the man as the missing person. Emergency personnel responded and the subject was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno by helicopter.

Captain McFarland and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office thanked Lassen County Search and Rescue and all of the emergency personnel who responded. He added, “We would also like to extend a special thank you to Caesar Hernandez for his quick thinking and actions.”
