Thirteen people were forced to flee their homes early Sunday morning as a fast moving structure fire on South Weatherlow street destroyed two residences.

Engine 623 from the Susanville Fire Department was dispatched to the structure fire at around 2:20a.m., arriving to find a fully involved single family residence.

“Due to the proximity of the structures the fire spread to two adjacent exposures,” explains SFD Captain Hernandez.

“E-623, T-1, Susan River Fire Protection District and Cal/Fire performed an aggressive attack to extinguish the fire. Additional resources were requested and firefighters battled the blaze for approximately two-hours before the fire was controlled.”

One engine from Janesville Fire Protection district, along with Air-1 and one engine from CDCR were also requested due to the extent of the fire according to Hernandez.

13 people living in the residences were displaced. The Red Cross assisted with placing the occupants in temporary housing.

Hernandez said that two structures sustained major damage and one received moderate damage.

Other units on scene were Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Susanville Public Works and CHP.
