The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory warning residents to prepare for a rare freezing-rain event tonight and Thursday morning followed by a series of weak-to-moderate atmospheric river events that will bring significant moisture to northeastern California.
According to Chris Smallcomb, NWS Reno Warning Coordination Meteorologist a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 4:00 this afternoon until 10:00a.m. Thursday.
Forecasters expect snow will spread across the area this evening, becoming mixed with freezing rain in the valleys early Thursday morning.
Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are possible with freezing rain accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.
Snow levels will start out at all valley floors this evening and then rise to above 7,000 feet late Thursday morning with mixed winter precipitation in the valleys.
With the freezing rain and winter conditions a light coating of snow and black ice could create very difficult travel conditions. Ice will also accumulate on sidewalks, tree limbs and power lines. Those with travel plans are urged to maintain an increased awareness while driving late tonight and Thursday morning.
