Lassen Reports ‘Violent’ Year
January 9, 1944

Lassen county has had its most violent year in history, according to a report issued by the Sheriff’s office which shows 791 arrests from January 1st to December 22nd, 1943.

Three murders were reported here during 1943, the records show, with only one such charge recorded during the eight previous years.

The firsts arrests made under the narcotic act in Lassen county were made in 1913, two being held on such charges. Three manslaughter charges were made. There have been less than three such cases in eight years.

The number of mental observation cases almost doubled, according to the report. Twenty-two persons were examined, with a past average for such cases of one a month. There has been a slight increase in petty thefts which totaled thirty-nine.

Arrests for disturbing the peace and drunkenness doubled, and one of the heaviest increases is shown in juveniles, which averaged only 10 or 12 for the past eight years, but jumped to 45 the past year.
