At last year’s Walk-a-Mile event more than 500 people came to walk in commemoration of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This year’s walk has been moved to Memorial Park and even more are expected to attend.

walkamileIn commemoration of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 19th – 25th, 2015, and through funding received from the National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators, Lassen Family Services and Lassen County Victim Witness are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Walk-A-Mile-In-Their-Shoes and Chili Cook-Off this Saturday, April 25th, from 10:00 to 2:00p.m. at Susanville Memorial Park. All event activities are free to the public.

The theme this year is Engaging Communities, Empowering Victims.

“We are excited to engage the community in a single event that recognizes the devastating impact crime has on individuals, families, and communities,” said Lassen Family Services’ Executive Director Melissa Downing. “By understanding the destructive emotional, physical, financial, spiritual, and social impact of crime, and raising awareness about the many services and programs available to help victims on their journey to empowerment, we can begin to build stronger communities.”

Opening ceremonies will be held at the Community Center at 10:00a.m. The walk, led by survivors of violent crime, will start shortly thereafter. The walk route progresses from the Community Center to North Street, following the perimeter of Memorial Park, turning right on Grand Avenue, right on Main Street, right on North Weatherlow, right on North Street and ending in Memorial Park where information booths hosted by more than 20 local agencies and the Chili Cook-Off will be held.

Members of the public who participate in tasting the chili have the opportunity to decide this year’s winner of the coveted Chili Cook-Off award. Children 12 and under who come dressed as their favorite superhero will be entered into a contest to win a prize.

“I invite the entire community to Engage, Empower, and Unite as we Walk-A-Mile-In-Their-Shoes on April 25th,” said Downing.

Over 500 community members have pre-registered – registration will open through the day of the event. For more information call Ashley Fisher at 530-257-5459 or to pre-register visit Lassen Family Services’ website at www.lassenfamilyservices.org.
