Susanville Man Arrested on Multiple Weapons Related Charges

A Susanville man was arrested on multiple charges related to possession of a sawed-off shotgun Wednesday evening after officers from the Susanville Police Department responded to a report of shots fired on Santa Paula Street.

According to details released today, the Police Department received a report shortly before 8:00p.m. Wednesday that a male subject was walking down Santa Paula street with a rifle, and had fired a single shot into the air.

The suspect then fled the area in a vehicle.

As several police units converged on the area, one officer observed the possible suspect vehicle leaving and a high-risk traffic stop was conducted on Pardee Avenue.

During the course of the investigation, the police report continues, it was determined that one of the occupants in the vehicle had thrown a sawed-off shotgun out of the vehicle on Hood Street prior to the traffic stop. A 20-gauge bolt action sawed-off shotgun was recovered from the yard of a nearby residence.

Police then arrested 34-year old Susanville resident Richard James Hefner for possession of a sawed-off shotgun, felon in possession of a firearm and felon in possession of ammunition. Hefner was booked into the Lassen County Jail and his bail was set at $30,000.

The case has been referred to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office.

In it’s media release the Susanville Police Department thanked the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with the investigation.
