Sheriff Reports New Round of Email Threats Against Local Schools

Friday, April 13th, 2018

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that multiple Lassen County schools and school districts again received emails Thursday evening that included threats to commit harm on school campuses. This appears to be a repeat of last week’s threats that were deemed to be a hoax by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The LCSO, Susanville Police Department, and California Highway Patrol will have increased patrol presence at campuses this morning, April 13th, while the threats are being investigated.

Local law enforcement agencies have been working with area schools and the Lassen County Office of Education.

The email information was forwarded to the cybercrime unit of the FBI. It appears that the email address used to send the threats was “spoofed” and the threats are likely a hoax.

“The safety and security of our schools and children is of the utmost importance,” explains LCSO Captain Kevin Jones, “and we take all threats to their safety very seriously.”

Anyone with information about these or other threats is encouraged to call the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office or Susanville Police Department.

Although any possible threat should be taken very seriously as I have 3 children in school. Has anyone thought this may be a government pseudo operation. Testing our countys response to threats like a drill? Forcing us to find and correct anything that arises in the drill and bring about more awareness. Just a thought. 🤷‍♀️

Shatsa college is starting to do ALICE drills for if and when a shooter goes on campus… Are any elementary schools doing drills?

I see that the schools in town had an issue with how their texts and emails went out. Not Janesville. They do a great job in this matter.

Well considering they didn’t notify parents until school was about out on Monday when it happened and it wasn’t even through the notification system but press release and then send an incomplete text this morning, I’d say that means our whole district may need an overhaul!

Samantha Bull or maybe people need to stop overreacting. These threats are happening via email all over the country. California is a state every country knows about, so if someone wanted to cause a panic, they’d use California.

These aren’t specific threats. These are vague, mass emails. My kid is at school today, and will be unless these threats become less vague. It’s being handled.
I choose not to live in fear.

Samantha McElrath since multiple school districts were threatened, that would be interesting to see where you could go.

Be informed. Don’t be scared. When people get scared they cause panic.

    • Samantha Bull

      Samantha Bull

      Friday, April 13th, 2018 at 10:59 am

Its not about panic but the lack of information the first time and lack of know how when they do notify parents now. My kids are at school as well but I’ve also dealt with these kinds of threats in our local high school which was written off as a hoax until the guy showed up on campus. So holding some credibility to it isn’t wrong when the school district isn’t notifying parents the first time around and cant properly work the system the 2nd time around.

      Friday, April 13th, 2018 at 11:50 am

I don’t care, hoax or not. This world is scary. And school attacks do happen. I’m not saying everyone should panic. But I’m going to worry. These are people’s children being threatened. MY children. And if I want to take some precautions to keep my child safe from harm, I will do so. And I wouldn’t ask questions to any other parent that wants to keep their child safe. We are all depending on these schools to notify us ON TIME and to protect our children, when they’re at school. If there’s not even just a little bit of worry that overwhelms parents, when we hear of a threat, then they shouldn’t be a parent. I will always protect my babies and prepare for dangers whether that be teaching them to look both ways before crossing a street or educating them on what to do, in case of a school attack! Don’t tell other parents how to react to this. It’s absolutely not your concern, how a parent reacts to a threat against THEIR children.

I’m not going to let this turn into “the boy who cried wolf”. Every SINGLE time I hear of a threat, I will worry. I will prepare. I’m not just gonna sit back and think “oh, this is another one of those Hoaxes.” I am going to investigate further into it. Every. Single. Time.

Our Alert Notification System was updated on Wednesday evening with a new bank of numbers to allow more communication features for parents. Due to this update, the phone numbers for our phone and text alerts have changed and are no longer local numbers. The benefit of the new bank of numbers is that if parents call the number back, they will be able to hear all of the messages they may have missed during the current day. This should help with the frustration and worry of missing a call and or message. Please add the new numbers that you have received our alerts from in your phone as the Susanville School District for future calls and messages. We apologize on the timing of this update and understand the confusion this may have caused. Thank you to everyone that helped us identify this issue. Unfortunately, events like this often help us to better streamline our communication systems.
