Several Local Businesses Suffer Severe Damage in Early Morning Fire

Several businesses in a building on Riverside Drive suffered severe damage, and a firefighter received minor injuries, in a Sunday morning fire according to details released by the Susanville Fire Department.

The department, along with automatic aid from the Susan River Fire Protection District and Cal-Fire, responded to a smoke alarm activation at 2920 Riverside Drive shortly before 3:00a.m. on Sunday.

Arriving on-scene firefighters reported that moderate flame and light smoke was coming from the roof and the eaves of suite #104. Light smoke was also observed coming from suite #103.

“Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack and the fire was contained at approximately 5:00.a.m.,” detailed Susanville Fire Captain Tom Hernandez. “The fire entered into a common attic which was above all of the businesses in the strip mall.”

The conflagration was contained to the attic but moderate to severe damage occurred to the building and all the businesses within. Salvage and overhaul operations were also performed.

Responding to the early morning fire were three Chief Officers, two Officers from the Susanville Police Department, seven fire trucks, one CalFire prevention unit, one Police Investigator and one ladder truck. 34 firefighters battled the fire, with one receiving minor injuries during the incident.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Agencies also assisting in the incident were Susanville Police Department, LMUD, City of Susanville Public works, Janesville Fire protection District and California Correctional Center Fire.
