Saturday Workshop for Roop’s Fort Excavation

Calling all archeologists and local history fans!

The Lassen County Historical Society is inviting community members to join them in a project that will excavate and explore the area immediately surrounding Roop’s Fort on Weatherlow Street this spring.

The fort was the first structure built in Susanville, dating back to the spring of 1853, and served as a trading post for emigrants during the gold rush. The cabin also served as the headquarters of the Nataqua territory and as a fort during the Sagebrush War of 1863.

Dig organizer Ginger Martinez and Susan Couso moving items from the fort, to be catalogued and stored

The History Society has spent more than a year preparing for the archeological event by doing site surveys, cataloging items within the fort and carefully vetting historical references to the area surrounding the structure.

Their next step is to actually put shovels in the ground and begin exploring. Be a part of it by attending a special workshop this Saturday, March 31st, at the Lassen Historical Museum next to the fort on Weatherlow Street.

“We have such an amazing opportunity here to explore the very heart of local history,” dig committee chairwoman Ginger Martinez explains. “We want the community to come and be a part of that.”

Ray Couso and Tony Jonas move ancient display cases from the inside of the fort.

Saturday’s organizational meeting will give folks who are interesting in participating a good look at what has been accomplished so far, and what the Historical Society hopes to find in the area. You’ll also get a rare tour of the fort itself!

If you would like to be a part of this unique historical adventure the workshop will begin at 10:00a.m., Saturday March 31st, at the museum, 115 N. Weatherlow.
