Saturday A.M. Update: Whaleback Fire Burns Nearly 4,000 Acres Near Eagle Lake

12:30p.m. Update
This is the most current map of the Whaleback Fire which is currently 4,000 acres.

“Once conditions are safe,” according to Fire Public Information Officer Leah Sandberg, “a helicopter will fly the perimeter of the fire to gain a more accurate idea of acreage.”

The fire is currently burning in a north and south direction. Evacuation orders are still in place. They will be lifted once the danger is mitigated and it is safe to do so.

7:00a.m. Lassen National Forest Incident Update:

According to the LNF the Whaleback Fire has now burned nearly 4,000 acres and is 5% contained.

“Last night crews were successful in conducting a firing operation to keep the head of the fire from entering the community of Spalding,” explains Public Information Officer Leah Sandberg.

“Today crews will work to build fireline around the fire to stop its forward progress.”

07/28/18 6:23a.m.

The quick-moving Whaleback fire, which began Friday afternoon at around 1:30 just west of Spalding Tract at Eagle Lake, has now burned more than 1,000 acres and prompted the evacuation of residents and campers.

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office put a MANDATORY EVACUATION order in place for the entire Spalding Tract, along with Merrill and Christie campgrounds  at around 7:00p.m., Friday.

There is no estimated containment of the fire which continues to burn out of control this morning in brush and timber.

County Road A1 is closed from the Gallatin Road to Spalding Tract.

A Type II Management Team is on order for today.

No structures have been damaged or destroyed as of midnight and the fire is still under investigation.

Currently working the fire are:
Engine / Truck Companies: 10
Water Tenders: 5
Fire Crews: 4
Helicopters: 5
Overhead Personnel: 10
Bulldozers: 5
Air Tankers: 4

EVACUATIONS

Lassen County’s Health and Social Services Department opened a shelter for evacuees of the Whaleback Fire at Assembly of God Church, 473-465 Richmond Road, Susanville, California 96130. Those affected by the fire can reach the shelter at (530) 310-2783.

It is asked for anyone going to the shelter to bring their medication and medical equipment (walkers, breathing machines, etc.), clothing for three days, and important papers such as insurance cards.

In addition, the shelter is not providing medical care. Any caretakers must accompany you for the duration of your stay.

Please keep in mind weapons, drugs, alcohol and personal bedding are not permitted at the shelter.
