Roop's Fort is the oldest surviving structure in the city of Susanville. Situated on a small bluff overlooking Paiute Creek and Susanville's Memorial Park, this log building was originally built in 1854 by Isaac Roop as a waystation for passing emigrants. It was also called Fort Defiance during the short lived Sagebrush War of 1863.
Roop's Fort was entered into the National Historic Building Registry in 1959.
Today the fort stands as a centerpiece for the Local Historical Museum located one block north of Susanville's main street at 70 N. Weatherlow.
