The lifeways of northeast California’s earliest people, those who lived before written history, will be the topic at the Lassen Land and Trails Trust’s next Discover Lassen presentation, to be held this Wednesday, March 21st, at 7:00p.m., at the Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Road.

Bureau of Land Management Archaeologist Marilla Martin will discuss paleontological and archaeological discoveries that reveal much about how the earliest people lived in the region and even how the landscape differed from what we know today.

“Recent paleontological discoveries including a mastodon tooth tell us much about the region and the animals that survived here millions of years ago,” Martin said.

“On the other hand, archeological finds such as rock structures, prehistoric rock ovens and rock art provide clues about how the first people adapted to the landscape and used the available plant and animal resources.”

Martin is the lead archaeologist for the BLM’s Eagle Lake Field Office based in Susanville. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in anthropology from California State University, Chico and her master’s thesis focused on prehistoric cooking in northeast California.

Discover Lassen is speaker series focusing on the lands, resources and recreation unique to Lassen County. Admission to the talks is free; the organization accepts donations at the door.

Martin’s presentation will include information about these unique ‘donut stones’ found in our region.
