NWS Weather Bulletin: Powerful Winter Storm Poised to Strike Northeastern California

weatherupdate

Good morning everybody, here is an update on the powerful storm that will begin to affect Susanville and the Honey Lake Valley late this afternoon. The storm is expected to be a powerhouse with heavy snow and strong winds from midnight tonight until Monday morning.

According the National Weather Service office in Reno heavy snow will return by tonight and continue into early Monday morning bringing snow accumulations of 2 to 4 feet west of Highway 395 and 10 to 20 inches along and east of Highway 395.

Winds, which are expected to gusts up to 40mph, may create areas of blowing and drifting snow throughout the day Sunday.

The storm will create dangerous conditions for outdoor activities and travel, with periods of whiteout conditions from tonight until Monday morning over mountain passes and areas exposed to the wind along Highway 395.

Light to moderate snowfall will persist through this evening before conditions really take a turn for the worse ahead of the storm. After midnight, according to the NWS, conditions may make travel impossible.

The National Weather Service’s recommendation for Sunday? “Do not attempt to travel. Stay home. Stay safe.”

According to NWS meteorologist Tony Fuentes this winter storm will provide widespread heavy snowfall totals which haven’t been seen for several years.
