NWS Weather Advisory: Series of Storms to Impact Region Today Through Monday

weatherupdate

Good morning everybody, the National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 10:00a.m. this morning and extending to 4:00a.m. Thursday.

NWS forecasters expect snow to begin late this morning and continue through early Thursday with snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches west of Highway 395 and up to 4 inches east of Highway 395.

Snow levels will start out at around 5,500 feet this morning before dropping to 4,500 feet tonight.

Active weather pattern this week…

Multiple systems begin pushing across the Sierra and western Nevada this morning. The first impact will be increasing winds this afternoon and evening. Wind gusts near 45 mph will be possible across the region with higher gusts up to 60 mph in wind prone locations like the 395 corridor between Johnstonville and the Nevada state line. Gusts of 80 to 120 mph are possible over the Sierra crest.

Between a foot to a foot and a half of snowfall is possible in the higher elevations of the Sierra, according to the NWS, with light rainfall for western Nevada before snow levels fall to the valley floors Thursday morning. Although no significant flooding impacts are expected, modest rises on small creeks and streams are still possible.

Two more quick moving and colder storms are possible Friday through early Saturday and again Sunday into Monday. The Sunday storm has the potential to be the strongest storm in this series. Snow levels are likely to start near western Nevada valley floors in each of these storms leading to more widespread travel impacts across both the Sierra and western Nevada.
