Nellie Oxford – December 29, 2013

Nellie  “Granny” Oxford

nellieNellie Irene Oxford passed away unexpectedly on December 29th, Nellie was born January 2, 1942 in Red Bluff, California to Marvin “Shorty” and Irene Graves. Growing up, Nellie lived 20 miles from Red Bluff on a ranch with no electricity with her parents and sisters Mary and Gwen. Nellie took great pride in her life on the ranch. The indoor lights were propane and had to be lit when used, no indoor plumbing, and going to school entailed riding a horse to the Reeds Creek School each day.

During the summers, Nellie and her family would take cattle to the Klamath Lake marshes or in the Ash Valley area near Alturus – again she took great pride and had fond memories of those experiences. Nellie moved to Westwood, California in 1958 to live with her sister Mary and husband Milton to complete her junior and senior year of high school. Nellie graduated high school from Westwood High in 1960.

Nellie met the love of her life, Chuck Oxford, at the Westwood bowling alley and their adventure began. Married on December 31, 1959 in Reno, they were married for 54 years. Chuck and Nellie had an unbelievable life together living in Westwood, then Susanville, and for the past 41 years at Levitt Lake. Nellie’s greatest accomplishments were her daughter Charlene (Steve), son Dale and her grandchildren Zachary (21), Thomas (19), Kelci (19), and Callie (16). She was by far the greatest grandmother possible and extended love and care like no other. Nellie was a fantastic cook and made a very warm and open home for all who came by and truly enjoyed working on her flowers or in her garden.

Nellie worked several places over the years working a dozen or so years at Shaffer elementary school, running a day care from her home and as a waitress at the Grand Cafe. Her time at the Grand Cafe was memorable and she loved talking with her customers.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents. Nellie’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at the Johnstonville Grange Hall, 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Susanville Salvation Army, 1560 Main St., Susanville, CA 96130 (530)257-4397.

Why Pre-plan?

Thinking about your own funeral leaves most people feeling a little uneasy, but more adults are finding that pre-planning a funeral offers great emotional and even financial security for them and their families. With pre-planning, families find comfort in knowing that the funeral reflects what their loved one wanted. It also gives them peace of mind to not have to make important decisions at a stressful time. Click here to visit Walton’s Funeral Home
