Modoc Sheriff’s Office Releases Details Surrounding Killing of Deputy

modocA Modoc County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot and killed Wednesday morning as he responded to a disturbance in a remote area south of Alturas, according to details released by Modoc County Sheriff-Coroner Mike Poindexter. A suspect in the shooting is in custody tonight.

At approximately 10:30 Wednesday morning the Modoc County Deputy responded to what the agency is calling a ‘civil disturbance/assault’ in the vicinity of County Road 115 and 170, approximately 10 miles south of Alturas.

Shortly after responding a call went out for an officer involved shooting and law enforcement officers from California Highway Patrol, Alturas Police Department, CalFire, US Forest Service and Fish and Wildlife responded. Emergency medical response was requested from Modoc Medical Center.

“The scene has been secured and suspect apprehended and is in custody,” Sheriff Poindexter explained this afternoon. “Personnel from Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol MAIT Team are investigating.”

According to the statement, more information will be released at a later date including the officer’s name which will be released pending confirmation of notification of next of kin.
