Students are expected to attend school in clean, neat clothing. It is the mission of the Susanville School District not only to provide academic education, but also to provide education in morals, manners, dress and grooming because these are elements of good citizenship. These guidelines are intended to define "appropriate student attire" and personal grooming. Their purpose is to prevent disruption of other students so as not to interfere with the education process. It is also intended to help protect the health and welfare of the individual student.

All students shall abide by the following.

1. Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed. Aersol cans are not permitted at school. No "spray on" color is allowed at school.
2. Shoes must be worn at all times. For safety purposes, no thongs, "flip-flops" or backless sandals are allowed at school.
3. Commercial lettering or printing will be allowed on shirts and sweatshirts as long as it is acceptable for school attire. Crude or vulgar printing or those that are sexually suggestive or drug and alcohol oriented are not acceptable.
4. Long pants are allowed for both boys and girls. The fullness must not interfere with the normal school activities and they must be clean and neat at all times.
5. Hats, and other types of head coverings may not be worn inside buildings. Ball Caps are not allowed at school.
6. All clothing shall be within the bounds of decency and good taste as appropriate for school. Garments shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times. Dress length shall be within the bounds of decency and good taste and no shorther than mid-thigh. No bare midriffs. No low-cut or revealing tops. No "off the shoulder" blouses. No tank tops. No garment may be worn that is cut-off, ragged, or torn. No "see through" or "fish net" type of blouse or shirt may be worn.
7. Students will be allowed to wear Bermuda shorts, walking shorts or shorts of this type. It is suggested that shorts be worn only in the months of May, June, and September or when the weather is warm. Shorts must be hemmed and straight legged. The length of the shorts must be no shorter than mid-thigh and within the bounds of decency and in good taste as appropriate for school. Short shorts, or gym shorts, are absolutely not to be worn at school. Shorts which do not meet this criteria are not allowed. Tops worn with shorts must adhere to the guidelines listed above.

The interpretation of the Dress and Grooming Policy is that of the principal or designee. Students violating any part of the Dress and Grooming Policy will be issued one warning and sent home to change into appropriate clothing if necessary. The second violation of the same nature will result in disciplinary action as determined by the principal. Consultation with the parent is encouraged at all levels.
No restrictions of freedom of dress and adornment shall be imposed by the District which may violate the student's civil rights, which impose particular codes of morality or religious beliefs, which attempt to dictate style or taste or which do not fall within direct or implied powers of the Governing Board.
