The Forestry Crew Technician I/Wildland Firefighter position is primarily a forestry position. The Forestry Technician I will work on a variety of forestry project field work. Specific project work will include fuel reduction activities such as thinning and piling of small diameter conifers and shrubs, invasive plant species eradication, and trail maintenance. Work will require the use of chainsaw, pole saw, weed eater, drip torch, log chipper and related equipment. Work will require frequent bending, lifting, hiking, and walking over a rough and uneven terrain. Location of projects may expose technicians to adverse weather conditions that may make working conditions difficult.

Forestry Crew Technician I/Wildland Firefighter will have the option to respond to Wildland Fire requests as part of an interagency agreement. Requests can be made to serve as a single resource personnel as well as to join 10-20 person hand crews. Assignments may require up to a 14 day absence from their home base.


  1. Attend trainings, meetings, and conferences as needed.
  2. Will follow instructions in order to achieve successful results with projects.
  3. Participates in all projects including: removal of diseased trees; small diameter trees; tree pruning; and piling, and chipping; may assist with prescribed fire burning.
  4. Barbed wire fence construction and maintenance.
  5. Assists in encouraging and developing teamwork among the Forestry Crew.
  6. Adhere to correct and safe usage of tools & equipment.
  7. Must be capable of performing hard physical labor since the work requires frequent lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), bending, hiking and walking over rough and uneven terrain.
  8. Contribute to the team effort by participating in the Susanville Indian Rancheria’s facility wide program improvements, goals, and standards.
  9. Will transport crew safely to and from projects.
  10. Other duties as assigned.


  1. Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
  3. Must be capable of performing hard physical labor.
  4. Must be willing to operate a chainsaw, pole saw, weed eater, drip torch, log chipper, and related equipment.
  5. Must have current CPR and Basic First Aid certification (or ability to be certified within 90 days).
  6. Must be willing to use navigational tools such as map reading, compass, GPS, etc.
  7. If interested in Wildland firefighting, must have successfully completed or be currently enrolled in the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2)(S130, S190,L180, I100) and be able to pass the annual Pack Test at the arduous level within 90 days.
  8. If experienced in Wildland firefighting, must submit Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) Master Record or equivalent documentation.
  9. Must have a current CA drivers license with no more than 5 MVR points and insurable as determined by the Susanville Indian Rancheria insurance provider.
  10. Must be at least 21 years of age for insurance purposes.
