The Forestry Crew Engine Boss manages the seasonal SIR Forestry Program which includes forest management and wildland fire suppression activities. Forest management includes supervision of one Forestry Crew Assistant Supervisor and up to three Forestry Crew Technicians on a variety of forestry project field work. Wildland fire suppression activities include supervision and leadership of a seasonal four person cross-trained Wildland Fire crew and Type 6 Fire Engine. The Wildland Fire Crew will be on-call during the fire season; fire assignments are expected to be intermittent and completely dependent on seasonal needs and the completion of other required SIR forestry work. When on fire assignment, the Engine Boss will lead the crew on initial attack response and fire suppression activities, extended attacks of wildland fires within the local response district and may be deployed outside the district for assignments lasting up to fourteen days on Federal, State, and Tribal lands. The Engine Boss will also ensure that crew members are fully trained and comply with safety regulations. The Engine Boss and Crew will work cooperatively with other Tribes and federal agencies.


  1. Supervise a four person Forestry Crew.
  2. Receive and implement complex instructions in order to achieve successful results on projects.
  3. Encourage and develop teamwork among the Forestry Crew members.
  4. Delegate work tasks and responsibilities.
  5. Demonstrate and ensure correct and safe usage of all tools & equipment.
  6. Identify safety precautions and educate the Forestry Crew on safety issues.
  7. Aid in fire suppression efforts by evaluating the fire situation, determining suppression methods, and initiating attack on wildland fires.
  8. Work will require driving SIR vehicles and Fire Engines, Transport crew safely to and from projects.
  9. Work will involve frequent bending, lifting, hiking, and walking over a rough and uneven terrain and inclement weather.
  10. Perform training on the use and safety of chainsaws and other tools.
  11. Perform clerical duties including preparing correspondence, forms, reports, filing, fire invoices, and some accounting for grant compliance.
  12. Organize paperwork and submit progress reports and time-sheets.
  13. Relate well with Native Americans and work well with the public.
  14. Resolve workplace disputes and conflicts in a timely and fair manner.
  15. Perform vehicle maintenance, e.g. maintain two fire engines and forestry vehicle fleet, schedule oil changes, tune-ups, etc.,
  16. Contribute to the team effort by participating in the Susanville Indian Rancheria’s facility wide program improvements, goals, and standards.
  17. Other duties as assigned.


  1. Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must have completed all Engine Boss Task Book requirements and be able to obtain NWCG or equivalent Engine Boss certificate within 30 days of hire.
  3. Must be able to obtain Red Card Certification within 30 days of hire.
  4. Must pass pre-employment medical exam and drug screen.
  5. Must have proven experience utilizing equipment including chainsaws, pole saws, weed eaters, drip torches, log splitters, wood chippers, and other related equipment.
  6. Must have a current drivers license and be insurable as determined by the Susanville Indian Rancheria insurance provider.
  7. Must be able to commit to the Susanville Indian Rancheria Forestry Program for the duration of the season and wildland fire assignments.
  8. Must have a demonstrated ability to work well with others and resolve conflicts.
  9. Must be capable of performing hard physical labor and be able to lift and carry 50 lbs or more.
  10. Must have current CPR and Basic First Aid certification or First Responder Certification or be able to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
