JH Heating Weather: First storm of the season is on the way

NWS Reno - Impact and Forecast Confidence

The National Weather Service is warning area residents to be prepared for the first appreciable storm of the season over the next few days, predicting that it will bring with it modest amounts of precipitation – both rain and snow.

“This still looks to be a modest storm in the grand scheme of things but given it’s the first storm of the season the impacts to communities and transport will be enhanced,” explained Chris Smallcomb, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Reno.

In his morning update Smallcomb said that snow levels are forecast to drop rapidly with this storm. NOAA forecasters are expecting winter driving conditions in the Sierra by early afternoon Friday as snow levels drop below 7,000 feet. The period of heaviest snows looks to be from about 2:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. on Friday – during which time snow levels will continue to drop to near 5,000 feet.

Widespread snows will start to wane by daybreak on Saturday but snow showers are expected, especially in the Sierra, through Saturday night.

Winds will gust to about 30 mph in the valleys Friday, with Sierra peaks gusting 60-70 mph.
