Three of Susanville’s most treasured citizens took off on an adventure this week, headed for Washington D.C. to see museums, national monuments and most importantly the war memorials with their own names set in stone. These three veterans, Don McDonald, Marvin Houston and Don Stampfli, are making the trip this week thanks to contributions from the community and the hard work of Christine Boyd and the local Soaring Eagle Blue Star Moms.

“To this day most of Europe is free, most of the Pacific is free and America is free,” explained Boyd. “This freedom came at a very high cost… They will be recognized as the conquering victors that collectively and literally saved the world.”

Boyd and the Blue Star Moms raffled off prizes and held fundraisers to finance the journey.

Don McDonald, who lives in Lake Forest and was a Naval Corpsman during World War II, thanked the community for making the trip possible for he and his friends in a short video.

McDonald will be joined by Milford resident Marvin Houston who served as a deck hand in the Merchant Marines during WWII and Don Stampfli, a Korean War Army Communications Man who lives in Janesville.

What a wonderful job Mrs. Boyd and the Blue Star Moms have done making this Honor Flight possible, and what a wonderful thing this community did by contributing enough to send three very special people on a journey to find out just how important they are to all of us.
