Gladys French
On the 13th of March, a few minutes before midnight, Gladys lost her final battle; the victor was lung cancer. Her final battle began in June 2013 with a small spot on her left lung. Gladys didn’t want chemo or radiation due to her age.
Gladys was born in Chicago in 1925 to Joseph and Monica Barbeaux. She began her schooling and graduated from Wells high school in Chicago in 1943. She worked as a bookkeeper until her enlistment in the Marine Corps.
A short time later she met and fell in love with her first and only husband, Clyde A. French, CPL. They were married and their son Mark arrived about 9 and a half months later. She continued working as a bookkeeper.
Gladys and her family followed the adventures of now GySgt Clyde French. They moved from coast to coast and would stay just long enough to see a flower, then off to the next assignment.
Gladys is survived by her sister, Valerie Barbeaux of Susanville, her son Mark French, twin grandsons Sawyer French of Monrovia, California and Dillon French of Chico, California, The family expands with nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins Mike and Kathy Barbeaux of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Gladys is now on her final patrol and rejoins the ranks of the few, the proud, the Marines. Semper Fi.
Graveside service will be Thursday, April 2nd at 3:00 p.m. at Diamond Crest.
