The Susanville Symphony Society brought summer to a close with thunderous clamor Saturday night, kicking-off their 15th season with a special concert on the lawn at the historic courthouse on Lassen Street. The third annual outdoor performance was part of a celebration of the historic courthouse’s 100th birthday.

Symphony fans and music lovers flocked to the courthouse with picnic baskets, folding chairs and tables for the spectacular outdoor event which featured music from movie classics like Legends of the Fall and Last of the Mohicans, classical icons of the literature like the 1812 overture, and popular songs from U2 and Journey.

The concert was the first of five Symphony performances scheduled for the season. Upcoming concerts include:

The Susanville Swing Band – October 13th and 14th
Susanville Swing Band leader Carlin Hagen returns us to that glorious by-gone era of live dancing and big band sound. Guest artists will fill the air with wonderful vocals, the saxophone section will set the tone and the brass will be bold and full. Bring your dancing shoes and dance, or just listen and relax in candlelight splendor as you listen to your favorites from Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey and more.

Christmas Around the World – December 15th and 16th
This year our popular Christmas concert takes you on a journey around the world. Take a peek into the history of some of the most popular music of all time. Green sleeves, The Huron Indian Carol, The Nutcracker and even a Latin taste with Feliz Navidad. This is one of the best ways in Lassen County to feel the love and sense of our community and to bring the holiday spirit to you and the ones you love!

Classical Masterpieces – March 2nd and 3rd
Our Classical Masterpieces concert will feature a guest soloist this year, prodigy Oliver Lietner, who is now a senior in high school. Some of you may remember his incredible performance four years ago with the Susanville Symphony. This year he will be performing the Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 in the second half. The first half will feature movements from Schubert’s 9th Symphony “The Great” and Tchaikovsky’s famous Symphony no. 5.

Susanville Pops Concert – June 1st and 2nd
For our Susanville Pops concert, the symphony turns its eyes on favorites from Broadway this year. Some of the greatest music from the stage will be played. Even though some of these selections became popular movies, ALL originated from Broadway. Selections from great musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof, Cats, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast and many more with be performed.
