Fire Officials Urge Caution with Fall Burning Projects

With the arrival of cool fall weather, many northeast California residents will be turning their attention to burning piles of leaves, pine needles, brush and limbs, and fire officials urge everyone to be careful.

Officials at the Susanville Interagency Fire Center said people need to pay particular attention to weather forecasts and avoid burning when high winds are predicted, such as the weather front forecast to move across northeast California over the next two days.

Conditions will remain dry until the region receives significant rainfall, said officials at SIFC. Following these tips will help ensure that burning projects do not get out of control:

  • Burn only on calm days.
  • Keep burn piles under four feet in diameter.
  • Keep handy a charged fire hose or a fire extinguisher with at least five gallons of capacity.
  • Never leave fires unattended, and make sure they are dead out at the end of the day.

Fire officials said those burning can be held liable for damages if burn projects escape control.
