February 22nd, 1923

The one-reel movie photographed by H.W. Largenow showing many scenes in Lassen County of interest to those agriculturally inclined and also scenes of the lumber industry, in the forest and at the mill, is now ready for exhibition.

It will be shown in Susanville and Westwood and then routed through “Californians Inc.” to Eastern points. The California Development Board and the United Chambers of Commerce will also show it. Before being sent to Eastern points it will be shown in Reno.

The office of Forest Supervisor which was recently moved from Red Bluff to Susanville is now permanently located in its new home in the Millwood addition.

A new building has been built expressly to house this office and is especially adapted to the needs of the services.

The seven men connected with the Lassen National Forest Service and their families are now comfortably settled, and express joy at the prospect of escaping the semi-annual move from Red Bluff to the Lassen Forest and back.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack last week announced the Burney-Hat Creek Basins Project will receive a substantial grant under the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) program.

The CFLR program is part of an accelerated restoration strategy underway on national forests and grasslands across the nation. Its overarching goal is to increase the pace of restoration on national forest lands and to create jobs in forest-dependent communities.

The Basins Project, envisioned by the Burney-Hat Creek Community Forest and Watershed Group (BHCCFWG), is slated to receive $605,000 in funding in 2012.

The BHCCFWG is comprised of a number of partners, including Todd Sloat representing the Fall River Resource Conservation District (RCD), Hat Creek District Ranger Kit Mullen representing the Lassen National Forest, and more than a dozen others.

The project focuses on 369,000 acres of Burney and Hat Creek watersheds and the communities dependent on this landscape. It involves public and private land and a diverse collaborative partnership group.

The Shasta Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) was the initiator of the idea of implementing a “legacy” project – a project that would involve the establishment of a collaborative to implement a landscape-level project to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, improve resiliency and forest health, and improve socioeconomic conditions.

In 2009, the RAC launched the project, supporting first an evaluation of local social and economic conditions, and how those conditions were linked to landscape health. Second, the Shasta RAC supported a stakeholder assessment, which involved interviews of more than 35 stakeholders, including representatives of the following groups: environmental, fire safe/services, fishing and the recreation service industry, independent forest contractors, Forest Service and other agencies, local ranches, private industrial timberland managers, the Pit River Tribe, and local mill and cogeneration facilities.

“The Burney-Hat Creek Community Forest and Watershed Group is an outstanding example of how people from a wide diversity of interests and backgrounds can come together to benefit our local communities and the environment,” said Jerry Bird, Lassen National Forest Supervisor.

More information on the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) program, including the Burney-Hat Creek Basins Project, may be found by following this link.

New Schools For Susanville
February 21st, 1949

Detailed plans for the next two buildings in the elementary school construction program were inspected and approved at a meeting of the Susanville elementary school board Wednesday night.

The completed plans were presented by architect Robert E. Kaestner of Visalia.

Clyde Merton, assistant superintendent of elementary schools in charge of the building program, said it is hoped that advertising for bids will begin in about two weeks.

The plans have been submitted to the state division of architecture for approval. It is hoped that work will begin on the two buildings by April 1st, Merton said.

Both new buildings as well as the new Lincoln unit will have radiant heating through the floor. They will be one story with sloping shed type roofs with large window spaces of modern design.

The superintendent of schools office will probably be in the building on the Washington site.

Susanville News
February 21st, 1923

The twenty-seventh annual masque ball of Ladies Relief of Susanville was held In the Orpheum building Saturday, February 17th. About 300 couples were present and the galleries were packed with spectators.

The costumes were many and varied, from the rollicking clowns to gentlemen of color, ladies of the harem to the polite maids of the ballet.

A number of prizes were given as follows. First, best dressed lady, Mrs. Robert Cook, $5.00; second, best sustained character, Mrs. Coughell, $3.00; third, best dressed man, Mr. Worley, representing Sir Walter Raleigh, $5.00; fourth, best group, Helen Wilbert, Frances Pierce, Pauline Wren and Olivia Gramer; fifth, best sustained mule costume, Mr. Young, $3.00.

The entire proceeds of this affair are used in relief work among those of Susanville’s populace to whom old Dame Fortune had dealt with a meager hand.

Susanville Wedding

A surprise to Susanville society was the marriage of Miss Rosanna Long and Walter B. Agee, which took place Friday evening at the Methodist parsonage.

Rev. Ira Price performed the service in the presence of a dozen relatives of the bride and groom. Miss Alcestra Lowe was maid of honor and Mr. Chelsey Long stood with the groom.

After the service the party repaired to the Republic Grill where an elaborate wedding breakfast was served.
