Jeremy-This is an awesome project! Thank you and if possible, could you add a "timeline" at the end of the final article with the lake levels at historical dates of significance (high and low) and possibly the events that are believed to be tied to those highs and lows? That would help tie all of the articles together and paint a great picture-__Thanks!

Hi Bernadette!
We touched a little on the Maidu history of the lake in Part One of our series.

We talked about the fact that the Maidu Indians have a legend about the lake which says, “Once Eagle Lake was a stream. Then it became a lake. It will become a stream again. And then it will flow away.”

Hinga Sim Mohm Dohnim, the Maidu name for the lake, means the “Forbidding Lake.” From what I understand the modern Maidu avoided the lake completely.

Other than that though our story is about the attempts to irrigate the Honey Lake Valley, and the local Native Americans as far as I know never attempted to irrigate using Eagle Lake water. Irrigation and reclamation was the goal of the settlers not those who were here before them.

Our goal isnt a comprehensive history of the lake and all of it's inhabitants, but simply a cursory look at the projects on the east shore in the last 140 years.

If you are interested in the Maidu history you can check out <a href="http://www.honeylakemaidu.org" rel="nofollow"> <a href="http://www.honeylakemaidu.org" target="_blank">www.honeylakemaidu.org It is a great site with lots of interesting information including an outstanding retelling of the Maidu creation cycle by Leona Peconom Morales.

Thanks for reading!

Where does Native American History of this area fit into all of this American History? Did Eagle Lake belong to the Native Americans before the American government decided to form Land Trusts and deals with settlers? Did Native Americans live in the Honey Lake Valley? Did they have a say in what the government was deciding to do with "someones land and water"? I suggest you contact Teresa Dixon for more accurate and complete history of Eagle Lake and the Honey Lake Valley.

have heard he has a total of 19 dams on the property and is using these water supplies to advertise and sell the property.
Someone need's to put this uy out of business.
My Grandad took me and my brother fishing in Willow creek way back in the early 50s. Trout fishing was really good. If my brother or myself didn't catch our limit our Grandad would tke fish he caught and toss them to us. If we caught them, that was another fish we could take credit for catching. God bless my Grandpa Leonesio,
