City Announces Hiring of New Susanville Chief of Police

newchiefThe City of Susanville announced the hiring of a new Chief of Police this morning, welcoming John King who takes over the top position in the Susanville Police Department on January 23rd. King replaces interim Chief Jim Uptegrove who has served the community since the departure of Chief Tom Downing in early 2016.

The letter, written by City Administrator Jared Hancock, briefly addresses the recruitment and selection process, gives background on the new Chief and thanks the community for their input.

“On behalf of the City Council, we would like to thank our outgoing Interim Police Chief, Jim Uptegrove, whose dedicated service was recognized at the last City Council meeting in addition to his assistance in the recruitment and selection process for the next Chief of Police.

“Over the last 6 months, the City conducted a comprehensive recruitment for the position of Police Chief. The recruitment yielded a number of quality candidates and the City is committed and confident in the process that included interviews conducted by local municipal and law enforcement professionals and later by City Management and the City Council.

“The City would like to introduce John King as the new Chief of Police. Chief King comes to us from South Lake Tahoe, starting on January 23rd, and will be working with Interim Police Chief Uptegrove during the transition. The City is excited about the future of the Department and a Chief that will continue to not only be committed to the safety and protection of each and every member of the community, but also the success of each officer in the department.

“The City believes Chief King possesses the experience and vision that can continue to lead the Police Department in a positive direction. We look forward to the support of staff, management, council and community as we welcome Chief King into the City family.

“The City would also like to thank the community for their input, not just during the recruitment and selection process, but every day, as they support our law enforcement professionals and provide meaningful feedback on how we can make our community a more safe and pleasant place to live and by participating in local neighborhood watch, crime stoppers and other community activities.”
