CHP Officer Deploys Taser on Fleeing Suspect Armed with Loaded .44 Magnum

There were some tense moments Tuesday evening east of the Susanville city limits as an armed motorcyclist, who had been stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer while in possession of weapons and narcotics, fled on foot into a field before he was stopped by an officer’s non-lethal Taser device.

According to CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a motorcyclist for a speeding violation and no rear license plate on Highway 36 just east of the KSUE radio broadcast tower at about 7:20p.m.

“Upon contact, the driver identified himself with a California drivers license,” explained Wilburn. “The officer asked the man to take off his motorcycle helmet to confirm it was the same person as pictured on the drivers license.”

At this point the motorcyclist had difficulty removing the helmet and became evasive about his identity. As a second CHP officer approached the scene of the traffic stop, the suspect fled across the highway and jumped over a barbed wire fence towards Gold Run Creek.

“The man made furtive moments and was reaching into his waistband,” said Wilburn. “The officer successfully tasered the suspect after the suspect jumped the fence.”

After being ‘tased’ the suspect removed a loaded Smith and Wesson .44 magnum revolver from his jacket, threw it in the bushes, and ran on foot before he was quickly apprehended by the two CHP officers.

After the arrest it was determined that the suspect, identified by the CHP as 31-year old Quincy resident Jeffrey Singer, gave the officer a driver’s license that was not his during the traffic stop.

The officers located the loaded .44 magnum revolver along with a small 22 rifle, ammunition for both guns, two knifes, heroin, needles, loaded syringes, marijuana, miscellaneous prescription pills and a scale.

Singer was booked into the Lassen County Jail with bail set at $27,000. He also had an outstanding warrant out of Plumas County.
