Local bus service and a program offering bike shuttles for large groups will make this summer’s trips on the Bizz Johnson National Recreational Trail convenient by eliminating the need to arrange vehicle shuttles.
The Bureau of Land Management and Lassen Land and Trails Trust are encouraging trail users to take advantage of the Lassen Rural Bus west county commuter service that operates Monday through Saturday. Bike rack-equipped buses leave various stops in Susanville and can drop cyclists, hikers and runners at Devil’s Corral, Fredonyer Summit, upon request, and Westwood. Return biking or hiking trips to Susanville are about 7, 18 and 30 miles on the Bizz Johnson Trail.
On Saturdays only, the bus also picks up passengers in front of the Historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Rd., at 8:20 a.m. and makes stops at the same Bizz Johnson Trail access points. Riders should arrive early. On Monday through Friday, riders are picked up at Main and Gay Streets and on Riverside Drive near Walmart. A small bus fare is charged and exact change is requested. Groups of more than six can arrange special bike shuttle service for mountain bike outings. Riders can use Lassen Rural Bus and the BLM will provide a trailer to shuttle bicycles. Groups must reserve the bike shuttle by calling the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, (530) 257-0456.
Bus service also provides a great option for one-way trips on the new South Side Trail, a seven-mile single track offering great hiking and running opportunities and a more challenging mountain bike route adjacent to the gentle Bizz Johnson Trail between the Hobo Camp and Devil’s Corral trailheads.
