Baseball: Susanville Minor All-Stars move on to Section Championship

The Susanville Minor All-Stars went undefeated outscoring their opponents 61-5 to win the 2016 District 48 Championship. The tournament took place in Susanville on June 17th-21st.

On June 17, Susanville took on Quincy and came out on top 12-3. Tyler Zahniser started on the mound going 3 innings giving up 3 runs on 4 walks, no hits and 3 k’s. Seth Mallery followed Zahniser on the mound pitching 2 innings. Mallery had 4 k’s, gave up 1 walk, no hits, and no runs. Matthew Battey came in to pitch in the 6th to finish out the game. Battey had 1 k and did not give up any hits or runs. At the plate Nash Osborn had 2 RBI, Seth Mallery went 2 for 4, Sutter Moss 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Tyler Zahniser 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Connor Wolcott 1 for 1 with 1 RBI, and Jack Wright 1 for 1 with 1 RBI.

Game two for Susanville took place on June 23rd against Modoc. Seth Mallery got the start on the mound and went 3 innings giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 run and had 7 k’s. Mallery was followed by Reese Chappius who pitched .2 innings with 2 walks, 2 k’s, no hits and no runs. Sutter Moss came in to finish out the game in the 4th giving up a walk and striking out the last batter to end the game. At the plate for Susanville Nash Osborn and Tyler Zahniser led the team, each going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI. Tucker Schall went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Matthew Battey 1 for 1 with 1 RBI, and Reece Chappius was 1 for 3. Susanville had 11 runs on 9 hits and only gave up 1 run to beat Modoc 11-1.

The next game for Susanville was on June 19th against Chester. Reece Chappius pitched a complete 4 inning game against Chester. He was backed by great defense from Seth Mallery, Sutter Moss and Jarin Wheeler. Chappius had 2 k’s, 1 walk and threw a no hitter, shut out. Chappius was supported at the plate by his teammates with 22 hits putting 26 runs on the board! Nash Osborn went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, Seth Mallery 3 for 5 with 1 RBI, Sutter Moss 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, Tyler Zahniser 4 for 5 with 6 RBI, Reece Chappius 4 for 5 with 6 RBI, Connor Wolcott 1 for 3 with 2 RBI, James Lynn 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Beck Williams 1 for 2 with 2 RBI, Matthew Battey had 1 RBI and Jack Heimbigner had 1 RBI. Susanville defeated Chester in 4 innings by a score of 26-0. This win earned them a trip to the championship game.

On June 18th, Susanville faced Greenville in the Championship game. Sutter Moss started on the mound for Susanville pitching 3 innings. Moss gave up 6 walks, no hits, 1 run and had 3 k’s. Matthew Battey finished the game on the mound. Battey went 3 innings giving up 2 walks, 1 hit, no runs, and had 4 k’s. At the plate Nash Osborn was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, Sutter Moss 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, Tyler Zahniser 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Reece Chappius 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Connor Wolcott 1 for 1, and Beck Williams 1 for 1. Susanville beat Greenville 12-1 to win the District 48 Championship!

The boys will play for the Section Championship July 16-21 right here in Susanville!
