Baseball: Susanville Major All-Stars travel to Burney

The Susanville Major All-Stars played for the District 48 Championship in Burney, CA June 22nd-26th. The team proved to be a competitive force in the tournament, but couldn’t overcome the team from Feather River.

Game one took place on the 22nd with Susanville coming out on top of Intermountain 10-3. Jacob Wolcott started on the mound pitching 4 innings with 3 k’s, 2 hits, and 3 unearned runs! He was followed on the mound by Jericho Daniel for 1.2 innings with 3k’s, no runs and no hits and Nolan Mallery for .1 innings with 1k. At the plate Susanville put up 10 runs on 11 hits and 4 errors from Intermountain. Leading the way at the plate was Jericho Daniel 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, Ben Null 2 for 2 with 1 RBI, Nolan Mallery 2 for 4, Braiden Fitzgerald 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, and Dominic Barghini 1 for 2 with a 2 run homerun. Next up for Susanville was the Almanor All-Stars.

On June 23rd Susanville beat Almanor 14-2 in 4 innings. Nolan Mallery started on the mound pitching 2.1 innings with 5 k’s, 3 hits, and giving up 2 runs. Jericho Daniel followed with 1.2 innings with 2 k’s and 2 hits. Dominic Barghini finished up on the mound for .1 innings giving up 1 hit, but holding Almanor to their 2 previous runs. At the plate Susanville had 14 runs on 13 hits and 2 errors from Almanor. Nolan Mallery went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Braiden Fitzgerald 2 for 4, Jacob Wolcott 1 for 2 with a homerun, Jericho Daniel 2 for 3 with 3 RBI, Dominic Barghini 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and a homerun, Evan Madden 1 for 1, Tanner Tibbetts 2 for 2, Tristan Marshall 1 for 1, and Bobby Robles 1 for 3 with a game ending 3 run homerun to put the ten run rule into effect.

Game 3 took place on June 24th against the team from Feather River. Feather River proved to be tough and defeated Susanville 18-5 in 4 innings. Jericho Daniel started on the mound and struggled against the disciplined bats of Feather River. He pitched 2.2 innings with 5 k’s, 2 walks, 5 hits and 7 runs. He was followed by Dominic Barghini  and Bobby Robles who collectively gave up 7 runs in .2 innings. Ben Null came in to finish giving up 1 hit, 1 walk and then striking out the last 2 batters to end the inning. At the plate Bobby Robles led the way hitting 2 for 3, Nolan Mallery went 1 for 2, Braiden Fitzgerald went 1 for 2, Ben Null went 1 for 2, Dominic Barghini went 1 for 1, and Evan Madden went 1 for 1 with a 2 run homerun. This loss put Susanville into the losers bracket and they were set to face off against the team from Almanor yet again.

On June 25th Susanville defeated Almanor again in an 8-7 walk off win. Dominic Barghini started on the mound going 4.2 innings with 3 k’s, 2 walks, 5 hits and giving up 7 runs. Ben Null finished on the mound going 1.2 innings and holding Almanor to their 7 previous runs with 2 k’s, 2 walks, no hits and no runs. At the plate Booby Robles led the way with a single, double and a homerun. Susanville was down 7-5 in the bottom of the 5th inning when Hayden Johnson came to the plate with two outs, 1 runner on, and hit a two run homerun to tie the game at 7. Ben Null came out to pitch the top of the 6th walking his first two batters only to strike out the next two and got a pop fly out to hold Almanor. Trenton Sanchez led off the bottom of the 6th with a single followed by a double by Nolan Mallery to put runners on second and third with no outs. Braiden Fitzgerald hit a ground ball to short stop sending Sanchez to the plate to score on a close play at the plate. Susanville lived to see another game in a walk off 8-7 win. The win against Almanor put Susanville in the Championship game, once again facing Feather River, who Susanville would have to beat twice to earn the Championship.

Susanville and Feather River squared off once again on June 26th to battle for the District 48 Championship. Once again Feather River’s bats proved to be too much for the struggling pitching from Susanville. Feather River claimed the Championship in an 18-11 win. Nolan Mallery started on the mound followed by Jacob Wolcott, Hayden Johnson and Tanner Tibbetts. Susanville’s pitching threw 8 k’s and gave up 14 walks, 9 hits, and 18 runs. They battled back offensively with 11 runs on 11 hits and 4 errors from Feather River, but it wasn;t enough to overcome Feather River. At the plate Nolan Mallery went 1 for 3, Braiden Fitzgerald 3 for 4, Ben Null 2 for 4, Tristan Marshall 2 for 2, Kevin Kiar 1 for 2, Tanner Tibbetts 1 for 3 and Bobby Robles went 1 for 3 with a grand slam homerun.
