The clear sunny skies and warm daytime temperatures help us forget that it is actually December, and yes, winter time in Lassen County. Winter time in our region means unpredictable, fast changing weather and poor driving conditions. The following are some ideas to help prepare for your winter driving trips:
1) Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition (ie: brakes, windshield, tires, heating system, fluids). Fill up your tank prior to leaving.
2) Carry chains that fit your vehicle (check vehicle manual for proper fit and placement of chains).
3) Carry an ice-scraper, de-icer, or something similar to help with the removal of snow from your windshield if you are to get stuck. Also kitty litter or sand can help with traction for your tires.
4) Carry blankets or extra clothing in case you are delayed due to road closures, weather etc.
5) Charge your cell phone.
6) Carry maps of the area you are traveling in and know what route you are taking prior to leaving for your destination.
Helpful driving tips in inclement weather and poor roadway conditions are:
1) Decrease your speed and increase distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
2) Allow extra time to reach your destination.
3) Avoid using cruise control.
4) If you find yourself losing traction, DO NOT apply your brakes, this could cause your tires to lock up and prevent you from steering. Slowly let off the accelerator and turn your steering wheel in the direction which the rear of your vehicle is sliding approximately a ¼ turn.
5) Maintain a high visual horizon. This will help to spot possible hazards in the roadway ahead of you.
6) Always wear your seatbelt and make sure children are properly restrained.
