American Cancer Society Relay for Life This Weekend

The 2014 American Cancer Society’s ‘Relay for Life’ is coming up this weekend and our local relay teams are getting ready for the big event.

This year the Cancer Society fundraiser is a bit different; The relay will begin at 9:00a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park with an opening ceremony and a survivor’s lap around the park. The relay will end at 11:00a.m.

“Several factors contributed to us reducing the length and scope of the relay this year, ” explains relay spokesperson Shellie Gregoire, “one being the construction of the new field at the high school.”

Since it will be light out during the abbreviated event, the Luminaria ceremony will be different as well. There will be signs erected around the circumference of the park that people may place the name of their loved one on.

“We will have food, music, and games as well.” said Gregoire. “It should be a great time!”

Participants honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease and raise money to help fight cancer in our community.

The Relay for Life is a life-changing event that nationally brings together more than 3.5 million people to help fight back against a disease that takes too much.
