Sad news this week as Dr. Bateson reports that Eagle Lake has broken a record, dropping to 5,091 feet on August 28th for the first time in recorded history. Just two days later Bateson recorded the lake level at 5,090.97 feet and it continues to lower at a frightening pace.

According to Bateson’s measurements the lake has dropped 2.76 inches in the past two weeks. However, he points out, boats are still launching at the south end of the lake and fishing is good – with catches averaging two pounds each.

As is shown in the historic aerial photos below the lake has dropped to near this level several times before, but Friday’s measurement, and the continued shrinking of the lake, is prompting fears that this year’s low-stand will be unprecedented.

Keep up with our local meteorological expert Dr. Bateson at his Bateson Observatory page on Facebook.
