Saturday's Historical Society Annual Meeting To Feature Nobles Trail Author Ken Johnston

The Historical Society's Annual Membership Meeting will be held at 1:00p.m. this Saturday, January 19th, at the historic Susanville Railroad Depot on Richmond Road. All members are strongly urged to attend and new members will be welcome as officers are chosen for the upcoming year.

President Jeremy Couso will give a brief year-in-review, elections will be held for two board officers and then author Ken Johnston, who has penned an excellent book on the subject, will be making a presentation on the Nobles Trail.

"William Nobles pioneered the Nobles Trail in 1851," explains Johnston in his book. "It provided a shortcut between the Applegate in Nevada and the last section of the Lassen Trail in California. It became what all other trails to California would have wanted to become: shorter, more direct to its destination, water and grass located in short intervals along the way, low elevation passes, no steep ascents or descents, and a civilized destination where provisions could be obtained."

Author Ken Johnston's excellent book on the Nobles Trail will be on sale at Saturday's meeting.

The public is welcome to come hear the presentation, which will be followed by a potluck lunch. Copies of Johnston's book will be on sale at the meeting.

Susanville Ski Club Revived; New Tow at Fredonyer Summit
January 14, 1951

Announcement was made by Rue Dastrup and Buddy Olsen that a ski tow and run are soon to be built at Fredonyer summit. The run to be named RuBo Run, will include a 1300 foot "T" bar rope tow and temporary shelter accommodations.

In connection with development of the new ski area, plans are underway to revitalize the Susanville ski club under new auspices, Invitation competitive ski classics between local ski adepts, Reno and Mt. Lassen Ski Clubs, and other groups will then be possible.

Dr. R. H. Amesbury, past president of the Susanville Ski Club declares: "I have long felt the need for skiing facilities in the Susanville area, and I am happy to see this project get under way. My perusal of the RuBo ski run with Rue Dastrup, revealed an unlimited potential of ski runs. With the proper enthusiasm from local ski fans, skiing in this area will have at last come into it's own."

The slopes near the RuBo run will offer varied skiing potentialities for beginning, intermediate and advanced skiers, Olsen and Dastrup explained.
