Lassen County Chamber of Commerce Update
by Patti Hagata
Executive Director

California employers and businesses are required to post updated employment posters at each place of business; the penalty for not posting the required notices is a steep fine of $17,000.

The Chamber will be ordering a supply of Labor Law posters that feature both federal and state labor laws on one poster and will be available for sale to Chamber members for $25.00 per poster and $35.00 to non-members. The poster contains the 16 mandatory notices that must be posted at each work place.

Labor Poster
Pre-orders are now being taken from businesses interested in having the required poster reserved for their business. The 2009 all-in-one California and Federal Labor Law posters will arrive by mid December. Contact the Chamber office at 257.4323 if you would like to have a 2009 Labor Law Poster ordered for your business.

Mark your calendar for the next mixer that will be held Thursday, November 13th, at Every Bloomin’ Thing, 705-670 Hwy. 395 East, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. New Chamber member Fat Boys Deli & BBQ will join in to co-host this annual mixer and will prepare some of their delicious food for everyone’s enjoyment. Melissa and her staff will have the store fully stocked with great decorating and gift ideas for the upcoming holidays. Everyone is welcome to attend and we encourage you to bring a friend!

The Christmas committee has been busy making plans for the 4th Annual Magical Country Christmas Celebration planned for Saturday, December 6th from 5-7pm in Historic Uptown Susanville.

The celebration will feature dance and musical performances, Christmas parade, food, tree lighting, Toys for Tots drive, and fireworks to ring in the Christmas season! Thanks to the Susanville Police Department Main Street will be closed to thru traffic during the celebration. The LMUD crew is busy preparing the big tree at the top of Main Street in preparation of the official tree lighting that will kick off the Christmas season. Santa will arrive by fire truck to help light the tree and join in the celebration. This will be a fun filled event for the whole family. Uptown merchants will be open late and will offer special sales and promotions in honor of this celebration.

Applications are now available to participate in the Christmas parade; stop by the Chamber office for your application or call us at 530.257.4323 and we will forward one to you.

Dan and Gloria Tinnell, distributors of the Bee in Susanville for almost twenty years, are looking for potential subscribers interested in daily delivery of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Chronicle is the largest newspaper in Northern California and the second largest on the West Coast. Price for daily home delivery will be around $30 per month.  Tinnell Distributing is looking to start delivery in mid November.  If you are interested call Dan and Gloria Tinnell at 257.6227.

Susanville Notes
November 6th, 1923

P.M. Woods, formerly employed at Westwood by the Red River Lumber company, was arrested by Marshal T. Long as he was marching along Main Street barefooted and with his shoes in his hands. He is now confined in the county jail and will be tried in a few days for his sanity.

The Athletic Club of Susanville is now an assured organization, as the necessary quota of 150 men has been enrolled and the women's class is in the process of formation. W. H. Mohler, popular wrestler, is responsible for this organization. He was formerly with the U.S. Navy and has had years of experience along this line which assures this club of expert guidance. The club will meet in the Story Club gymnasium which is now very well equipped but which will have some additions made in its athletic apparatus.

Jimmy Barnes, Litchfield's premier bootlegger and former Southern Pacific agent, was sentenced to six months in the county jail by Superior Judge Burroughs for unlawful sale of liquor.

Barnes has been arrested numerous times by Sheriff Carter and his assistants hut always managed to get off with a mild fine at the hands of Justice of the Peace Woods of Susanville.

Yesterday one of the best equipped stills in Lassen County was destroyed by deputy sheriff A.C. Hunsinger and C.A. Norwood. The still was found under a pile of sawdust at the Jellison mill near Buntingville.  The still was hidden in a unique manner. In order to get into the room the deputies had to go under a stream of water. Eight barrels of mash and forty gallons of moonshine were destroyed as it was not needed for evidence, there being no one present when the raid was made. A 200 gallon vat was also destroyed.

J.C. Horn commonly known as Coal Oil John was arrested in Westwood on a prohibition charge.  He appeared before Judge Green and was bound over to Superior Court for trial.
