Volume One Number 193

The “Every 15 Minutes” program came to Lassen High on Thursday; a CHP sponsored and directed enactment of a drunken driving accident on Arnold Field.

The program which makes the rounds of high schools in the county once every three years is intended to educate and discourage high school students from drinking, using drugs or driving under the influence.

The grim scene played out before the students on the field involved SEMSA paramedics, the City Fire Department, the CHP and Mountain Lifeflight helicopters, Lassen County Sheriffs, City Police, CalFire and others.

Students portrayed victims of the crash as the Grim Reaper walked among the smoky wrecks with emergency personnel separating the injured from the dead.

The two day program will continue Friday with the reading of eulogies at a memorial service for the students who were abruptly taken from the school today.

The Every 15 Minutes Program offers real-life experience without the real-life risks. This emotionally charged program is an event designed to dramatically instill teenagers with the potentially dangerous consequences of driving under the influence.

The program challenges students to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved.  To find out more about the program click here.

County Clerk Julie Bustamante informs voters of Lassen County that the Sample Ballot booklets for the Statewide Special Election have been mailed.

In an effort to save taxpayer dollars, a large number of precincts have been converted to “Vote by Mail” precincts for this election.  If your precinct was converted, your Sample Ballot will be included in the envelope with your Official Vote by Mail Ballot.

If you receive a Sample Ballot, make sure to check the back and determine your polling location.

Many polling locations have been changed for this special election to save financial resources.

If you receive a Vote by Mail Ballot do NOT throw it away; you will not have a polling place and will need that ballot to vote in this election. Please watch your mail closely.

Any voter who does not receive either a Sample Ballot or a Vote by Mail Ballot is urged to contact the County Clerk’s office to determine if they are registered to vote and if their address is correct.

Election materials cannot be forwarded by the Postal Service. If the County Clerk’s office does not have your current address you will not receive your information.

The last day to register to vote in the May 19, 2009 Statewide Special Election is Monday May 4th.
If you have any questions please contact the County Clerk’s office at 530-251-8217, or come to the Courthouse at 220 South Lassen Street, Suite 5, in Susanville.

According to the Secretary of State the Voter Information Guides for the May 19, 2009 Special Statewide Election will be shipped no later than Tuesday April 28, 2009.

These guides contain information that voters need to make an informed decision on the 6 measures on the ballot.

The guides are being mailed by the Secretary of State approximately three weeks later than normal because the measures were passed by the Legislature late in the election cycle.

The Lassen County Clerk has a supply of these guides which voters can pick up in person at the Registrar’s office located in the courthouse at 220 S Lassen St, Suite 5, in Susanville. Or you can click here to view the guide online.
