The Lassen County Office of Education’s annual Third Grade History Day will be held tomorrow in uptown Susanville.

The event, which is a celebration of the town and its history, gives third graders from all over the county a chance to learn more about their own connections to the past.

Third Grade History Day was founded several years ago when the Lassen Historical Society combined with interested third grade teachers to present a living history program.

According to past Historical Society President Janet Corey the plan was to, “Aim for a program where the students would be actively involved and not just entertained.”

The walking tour of uptown takes the students to several historical locations where they meet interesting characters from Susanville’s past.

At the courthouse students meet the town’s founder Isaac Roop, in the old cemetery they meet up with Sheriff Byers, they will hear pioneer music performed live and find out about Native American history.

After the walking tour the students visit Roop’s Fort and Memorial Park, resting stop of hundreds of covered wagons that followed the Noble Trail in the 1850s.

At the park students will have a chance to barter for fun stuff at the trading post and take wagon rides.  For more information about the County Office of Education’s Third Grade History Day click here to visit their website.
In front of the courthouse County Supervisor Jim Chapman, as Isaac Roop, teaches 3rd graders about the history of their town.

Hearing Awaited In Land Dispute
April 23rd, 1950

Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Strom posted "No Trespassing" signs this week along property lines which they have claimed marked the boundaries of their property at the head of Court Street. They made this claim in a civil suit brought in superior court last November. No decision has been rendered by the court as yet.

A log has been placed across the entry to a dirt road continuing up the hill from Court Street and "no trespassing" signs placed on it. Four other small “no trespassing” signs have been placed in this area, one of them on a stick stuck between the pipes on the Camp Fire Girls' cabin oil drums, and another at the edge of the stone steps leading into the cabin. It is signed by "Enoch Strom and Nora Strom."

Mrs. Kenneth Doyle, president of the Camp Fire council, decided not to make an issue of the situation upon advice of the trustees C. D. Mathews and Dr. C. I. Burnett. The council will wait upon the decision of the judge. In the meantime the Camp Fire Girls are meeting at the McKinley School and in various private homes.

Three "no trespassing signs” are posted on a line which would cut off Dr. Burnett's garage from the rest of his property. Dr. and Mrs. Burnett continue to use the garage. The property in question is a continuation of Court St. which had been abandoned by the city in 1930 or 1931.

Dr. and Mrs. Burnett claimed title to one-half of the street, the north side which adjoins their property, when they appeared in court last November. They have put up a fence and garage on that section, and have paid taxes on it for about 10 years.

Enoch Strom and his wife claimed title to the whole street including the site upon which the Camp Fire cabin now stands. The Stroms have a deed to the south side of the street, and a bill of sale or deed from Don L. Woodward, who sold them the property, to the whole street. They have been paying taxes on the south side of the street for a number of years.

Mrs. Ray Packwood and Mrs. T.C. Tempers, former Camp Fire officials named in the case, claimed that when the city abandoned the street, it did not abandon that section which is now the site of their cabin, so that no one else can rightfully take possession of that land.

J. O. Moncur, superior court judge of Plumas county, came down from Quincy to hear the case in Susanville. Through a technicality, B. V. Curler, superior court judge of Lassen county, could not preside.
