The Diamond Mountain Speedway at the Lassen County Fairgrounds has announced the schedule for the 2009 race season.

This summer’s dirt track fun for modifieds, strictly stocks and mini stocks starts with a play day at the track May 2nd, and the first points race of the year on May 9th.

There are ten race dates on the calendar between May and September 12th and racing starts at 6:00pm each night. To see the complete schedule along with more information please click here or call the fairgrounds at 251-8900.

April 18th the Diamond Mountain Casino and Hotel will present an evening of Cowboy Poetry, Music and Barbecue.

The ‘all ages’ show will feature music and poetry from songwriter Richard Elloyan and cowboy poetry from favorites Tony Argento and Ken Gardner.

Elloyan began singing his western music and telling his stories at a home town open mic event in Dayton, Nevada back in 1997. Surprised by the reception of the crowd to the song “Carolina” he began performing and reciting the songs and stories he had been writing for the past thirty years.  He hasn’t slowed down since.

Tony Argento began reciting Cowboy Poetry in grade school in 1965 at age 5. His unique interpretation of the Cowboy way continues today.

Tony refers to his style of reciting Cowboy Poetry as; "Tuned Up & Twisted!" Notable poems he recites onstage include; "The Devil's Tail," by Gail Gardner, “The Shootin' of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee,"

Argento admiringly acknowledges the writers of the poems he recites out of respect, and says, "I like the idea of continuing the poet's stories so others can enjoy them, too."

According to his bio Ken Gardener is, “… an urban cowboy and a professional dude. I own a saddle but no horse and a pasture but no cow. I have done many things that cowboys do, e.g., fallen off a horse, been kicked and bitten by horses, wrangled dudes, been in a western movie, milked cows, drunk milk with flies in it, slept with wet dogs, rolled quirlies, and written poetry.”

The $15.00 dinner includes Tri-tip roast, chicken, country potatoes, vegetables, dessert and appetizers. The dinner starts at 5:30pm and showtime is 6:30.

This is always a popular event so make sure you get your reservations soon.  For more information about the Cowboy Poetry, Music and BBQ call 530.252.1100 or visit the Hotel’s website click here.

Buck Jones Buys Meadow Brook Ranch in Lassen County
April 6th, 1942

Buck Jones, western movie star, has purchased the Meadow Brook ranch near Susanville, formerly owned by George Wingfield of Reno.

Announcement of the sale was made by Jones at Susanville.

Jones and his wife plan to remodel the spacious ranch house, and Jones said he would raise blooded horses and cattle on the ranch.

The Meadow Brook ranch covers 1,427 acres and has a large home built by Wingfield, who bought the property in the early 1900's from the Summers and DeForest holdings.

Later the property was sold to the Lassen Lumber and Box company, which in turn sold it to the Susanville Country club.

In 1925 the property was taken over by the Western States Life Insurance company, which held it until 1932, when L. R. Cady and Frank Coffin purchased it.
