The Susanville Eskualdunak Club and the Mendi Danzarriak Dancers will present their annual Basque Lamb Stew Feed Saturday April 4th.

The Stew Feed is one of three major events that the local Basque club puts on each year.

The dinner will feature lamb stew, Basque beans, green salad, cheese, bread and beverages.

Not only will there be great traditional Basque food, but the Mendi Danzarriak dancers will perform time honored dances and there will be a silent auction.
The event will take place at the Monticola Club on Lassen Street between 5:30 and 7:30 on the evening of April 4th. Tickets are $8.00 per person, $4.00 for children (13 and under) and families can buy a ticket for 2 adults and up to 4 children for only $25.00.

All of the proceeds raised during the stew feed will help send the dance group to music camp.  For ticket information call Michelle at 257-5367 or 310-0166.
Susanville’s Basque Club was organized in 1975, but long before that local Basques were holding an annual picnic.  That tradition continues each year on the first Saturday in August.
Each spring the Eskualdunak Club holds a mus tournament. Mus is a card game originating in Basque country and is still the most played card game in Spain.  The game uses a deck of 40 cards. (8’s 9’s and 10’s are removed)

The yearly mus tournament brings players from all over the west coast to try their hand at the game.

Reno Architects Condemn Lassen School Buildings
March 26th, 1948

More than 200 elementary school children were sent home from their classes Thursday after a Reno engineering firm made inspections at the request of citizens and the board of trustees.

A public meeting was called by the school board Friday night at which about 75 local citizens discussed methods of financing some 19 needed classrooms. After hearing the opinions, the board agreed to lay plans for a bond election. Last December a-20-year bond proposal for $174,000 was defeated.  Chief objections were the longtime period involved. At that time the desperate condition of two buildings was not known.

DeLongchamps & O'Brien, architects, said the Washington school building could not be altered to conform with requirements and that repair of the McKinley building would "seem generally inadvisable."

Because of the abrupt condemnation, the school board took immediate action and dismissed about 200 children in the primary grades following their meeting Wednesday night. The school board will keep the McKinley building open until the end of the term for eight intermediate classes. The school board had requested inspections by the California division of architecture, but because of pressing needs over the entire state they have not been able to comply with the Susanville request.

A letter received by the local trustees from the state indicated that the inspection by private engineers would suffice in place of an official inspection by one of their representatives.  In order to accommodate 210 children, classes will be double shifted at the McKinley and Lincoln elementary buildings.

In order to satisfy code requirements for the McKinley school, the survey showed that the top floor would have to be removed and possibly the first floor, thus abandoning four and possibly eight classrooms. This would leave six or only two usable rooms.

"It would seem generally inadvisable to undertake a repair and alteration program," the report said.
