Local author Tom Gauthier’s new novel, based on the journal entries of Ben Wade as he kayaked from Baja California to Columbia is now on store shelves.

The book titled ‘A Voyage Beyond Reason’ is a chronicle of Wade’s 1997 entry into the record books with his 6,000 mile solo kayak journey.

Along the way Wade battles solitude, a hurricane, two bouts with sharks, poisoned water and a litany of oceanic dramas.

The book’s author Tom Gauthier has written for newspapers, national publications, dramatic productions and he recently published the action adventure novel ‘Code Name: Orion’s Eye’.

Gauthier also continues to consult with companies and government on organizational and communications issues. He is a private pilot, a member of the Elks Lodge, and the American Legion.

Wade is currently featured in the CBS television show Survivor and is artistic director of the Susanville Symphony Society.  To purchase the novel ‘A Voyage Beyond Reason’ from Amazon.com click here.

The United States Geologic Survey is reporting a series of small earthquake swarms that have occurred beneath the south flank of Lassen Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park.

The unusual activity began on March 17th and has continued since.  In the last three days there have been 76 earthquakes large enough to be recorded, with several larger than 2.0 in magnitude.

These earthquakes have been centered at a depth of roughly 5 km below the surface.

Earthquake swarms are not unusual in the Lassen peak area, and all along the volcanically active Cascade mountain range.

The USGS is continuing to monitor the swarm events. For current earthquake information from the USGS you can click here

Susanville Again Suffers a Serious Conflagration
March 20th, 1895

At an early hour yesterday morning the people of Susanville were startled by the dread cry of fire, and they had barely time to hurry on their clothes and rush from their homes before the red glare and strong wind convinced them that the little city was again in danger of total destruction.

The fire was discovered in the rear of Sol. Nathan's general store, having started in a shed.  From this the flames caught on to E. Johnstone's hotel, a large three story building, and was soon beyond control, rapidly communicating with adjoining buildings leveling to the ground the entire block on the north side of Main street, between Lassen and Gay streets.

The buildings on the south side of Main street were on fire several times, but a terrible fight was made and they were saved.

Nearly all of the loss is covered by insurance, but it is a severe blow, and especially so when it is considered that Susanville has just about recovered from the last serious fire, which in fact occurred in about the same part of town.
