The Bureau of Land Management is recruiting "weed warriors," seasonal employees who will work this summer to combat the spread of invasive and noxious weeds on public land in northeast California and far northwest Nevada.
The BLM plans to fill eight positions -- four in Susanville, two in Alturas and two in Cedarville -- for a season that begins in mid April and runs for up to six months.
"This is a great opportunity for a seasonal job where workers have a real chance to make a difference in the health of our public lands," said Dayne Barron, manager of the BLM's Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville.

"These jobs are also a good first step toward a career in natural resource management."
Applications must be filed via the internet by Sunday, March 1. Job descriptions and application instructions are available at www.usajobs.gov.
Jobs are listed under the title Range Aid/Technician (Weeds), under the announcement number NHRMC-2009-0092. Weed warriors work four 10-hour days per week in rugged back country locations to locate, map and apply treatments to weeds that threaten wildlife habitat and productivity of the land. They must be able to operate manual-transmission, four-wheel-drive pickup trucks. They should have strong communication and map reading skills. Experience with global positioning systems equipment is helpful. Because work is performed in hot weather and rugged terrain, crew members must be in good physical condition.
For more information contact Carol Gibbs in the Eagle Lake Field Office, (530) 252-5318.

Fair Manager Travels to College of Fairs
January 26th, 1946
Abe Jensen, secretary, manager of the Lassen County Livestock Show, will attend the first College of Fairs in history on February 11, 12, 13 and 14 at California Polytechnic school at San Luis Obispo where studies of the latest techniques of efficient exposition management will be undertaken.
In addition to pursuing this course of instruction, he will present some of the problems involved in advancing the interests of the Lassen County fair in the sharp post war expansion anticipated for the 76 fairs of six western states.
The course of study will include administration of new master premium lists affecting 45,000 exhibitors in competition to produce better farm and factory products, and a score of other subjects involved in efficient operation of fairs as "show windows of achievement."
The College of Fairs, conceived to improve efficiency of management during post war expansion of an industry which in the last year of normal operation in 1941 was a $20,000,000 business, will be conducted by experts from agriculture, manufacturing, government and universities. Their concern will be to provide instruction for all persons concerned with presenting the fair as an interesting show window of progress, a stimulator of agriculture and industry to create more abundant living for all, said President E. G. Vollmann of the Western Fairs association.
