Televisions across the country will be tuned into this morning's inauguration of our 44th president Barack Obama.

Here's a schedule of events for those of you who want to watch the ceremonies.

The inaugural festivities are scheduled to start at 5:00am (our time) on the west front lawn of the US Capitol.

The event begins with musical selections by the United States Marine band, an invocation by the Rev. Rick Warren and a performance by Aretha Franklin.

At 8:30 Vice President elect Joseph Biden will be sworn into office by Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and at 9:00 Barack Obama will take the oath of office, using President Lincoln's inaugural Bible.

After the new President gives his inaugural address he will escort outgoing President George W. Bush to a departure ceremony before attending a luncheon in the Capitol's Statuary Hall.

The major news networks CNN, MSNBC and FoxNews will all feature wall-to-wall coverage of today's inaugural events beginning at 5am and lasting well into the evening.

Both Lassen High soccer teams will be in action this afternoon, taking on the Yreka miners.

To keep you warm the boosters will be serving some great hot chocolate free of charge.

Come on out to Riverside Park to support the Grizzlies against their league rivals.

Boys play at 3:15 with the girl’s game set to begin about 5:15.

The Susanville City Council will meet in regular session this Wednesday evening at 6:00.

The council will be recognizing Mae Sherman for an award she received from Soroptimist International of Susanville.  Sherman is the long time director of the city’s child care center, part of the Parks and Rec department.

Council members will consider resolutions adopting the midyear budget and accepting grants for both the fire and police departments from Wal-Mart.

Also on the agenda is discussion of the city's draft heat pump system construction guidelines, part of an ongoing conversation regarding the Lutheran Church's application to install a geo-exchange heating system to replace their aging oil furnace.

Open session begins at 7:00 in Council Chambers at 66 N. Lassen Street. To download a printable copy of Wednesday night’s agenda click here.

Arnold Seated as New State Senator
January 20th,
1956

Stanley Arnold of Susanville became the new state senator today, representing Modoc, Plumas and Lassen counties.  With Arnold at the ceremonies are his wife Almida, and his son Stanley D. Arnold.  Arnold, a Democrat, was elected in a special election to succeed the late Dale C. Williams, also a Democrat of Modoc County.

One of Arnold's first acts was to issue a statement calling for "speedy and effective action on California's serious water problem."  Arnold in his statement said that "the recent disastrous floods were further conclusive proof that California cannot afford to waste time talking on the subject of water. Just a few critical dams would have saved scores of lives and untold millions of dollars in damage."

The new state senator said that the damming of the Feather River, both at Oroville and in the Upper Feather River Basin, should be one of the focal points of action. "Let us make some effort to turn this tragedy to our advantage by pressing for immediate action on water while the ravages of the recent floods are still firmly planted in the public's mind," Arnold declared.  Arnold said he hoped to convey these thoughts to Governor Goodwin J. Knight at the first opportunity.
