Don't Want Jail Closed
January 14th, 1961
|
The Lassen County board of supervisors is seeking means to ward off possible condemnation of the county jail.
The state structural engineer, in recent findings, declared the 50 year old stone constructed building was unsafe.
However, Lassen County Sheriff Calvin L. Smith went on record stating he felt the building was safe for the security of prisoners and the deputies who are employed here.
The structural inspection followed that of the state fire marshal who set forth 14 recommendations to bring the building up to standards. No estimate to meet these requirements has been made.

|
|
The board is discussing the feasibility of setting up a building fund for later construction pending the outcome of the fire marshal's final decision on the engineer's report.
Sheriff Smith told the board he estimates a new building of comparable security, which now can handle at least 35 prisoners, would cost approximately $500,000.
