The 25th annual Junior Fishing Derby was a huge success this weekend with 477 young anglers registering for the Lassen Sportmens Club sponsored event.
Kids between the ages of 2 and 15 lined the banks of Paiute Creek and the Susan River on what turned out to be an exceptionally beautiful spring morning and competed for prizes in several different categories and age groups.
First place finishers in the 6 to 15 age group received bicycles donated by Billington Ace Hardware and bicycles for the 2 to 5 years old were donated by US Bank.
Western Nevada Supply donated the rod and reels as second place prizes for both age groups and third place winners were given nice tackle boxes contributed by Larry’s Spirit Gas.
“During the presentations many of our long-term sponsors, some for the entire 25 years, were recognized,” said event organizer Supervisor Jim Chapman.”
Arlin Billington of Billington Ace Hardware was on hand to present the bikes to the winners in the 6-15 age group.
“He has donated that prize every year for the past 25 years and these were bikes #49 and #50,” said Chapman.
Rod Chambers from KSUE/JDX93 was on hand to accept the certificate on behalf of the stations which have provided coverage of the derby since year one.
According to Chapman more than 15,000 participants have been a part of the derby over the last 25 years.
