Monument for Pioneer Roop

Susanville Honors Pioneer Settler and Provisional Governor of Nevada

August 10th, 1914

Public spirited citizens of Susanville and of that region have provided a substantial monument which has been placed, over the grave of the late Governor Isaac N. Roop in the Susanville cemetery.

The monument to the memory of the Lassen county pioneer consists of two blocks of gray granite weighing over four tons and quarried near the Perkins ranch, five miles South of Susanville.

It was shaped by Robert Brodie of Susanville and although for several years contemplated, became a reality mainly through the efforts of J. Pardee and A. M. Fairfield of Susanville.

The unveiling ceremony will be held on September 9th and will be made a notable event in that section. The tablet on the monument bears the following inscription:

”Sacred to the memory of Governor Isaac N. Roop, the pioneer settler and Free Mason of Lassen County. In 1853 he settled on the land where he afterward laid out the town of Susanville.”

”He was governor of the provisional territory of Nevada. Held many offices of trust and honor and was the most prominent man in this section until his death. Born in Maryland, March 13, 1822. Died in Susanville, February 14, 1869.”

”This monument was erected, in 1914 by the Masons of Honey Lake Valley, Lassen Parlor No. 99, N.S.G.W., and Asa M. Fairfield.”
